Richmond clinical assessment service

The Richmond clinical assessment service (RCAS) is a referral management service that has been operating in the borough of Richmond since August 2010. The service is used voluntarily by Richmond GPs and utilises the national Choose and Book system, which means that Richmond GPs are able to refer all eligible referrals via the RCAS service.

A team of local GPs are responsible for reviewing eligible referrals to ensure that they meet the criteria for onward referral. The GP assessors practice locally in the borough of Richmond across approximately eight different GP practices and have excellent clinical and local knowledge of available services.

What is a referral?

If your GP thinks your care would be better dealt with at a hospital or clinic, they can recommend which would be most appropriate for you. You have the right to choose which hospital or clinic you go to.

How will my referral be dealt with?

RCAS is a referral management service. RCAS manages referrals from local GPs so that you get the best treatment. This may be at a hospital,  clinic or from a professional with special training relevant to your condition.

The aim of RCAS is to avoid unnecessary delays to your care, by making sure that GP referrals are evidence-based, appropriate and include all investigations prior to hospital appointments.
