The Big Event Success!
This year's Big Event for adults with a learning disability and their carers focused on staying healthy and happy. The event was jointly hosted by NHS Richmond Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Richmond Council and it was held on Tuesday 29 March at York House.
The Big Event was an interactive evening with lot to see, learn and do. It has been hailed a great success as it gave adults with a learning disability and their carers the opportunity to access information and advice on their health and wellbeing in a fun and accessible way, including a very popular music room and making healthy drinks on the smoothie bike.
Attendees were able to speak to specialist healthcare professionals, including a local GP, dentist and optician. The Met Police and London Fire Brigade were also on hand to offer advice on staying safe in the community. Richmond Mencap's Working Together Group ran a powerful activity which invited participants to express their thoughts about what it feels like to have a learning disability.
Everyone was also invited to share their views about what would make a healthier borough and in turn service providers engaged with participants to let them know about the activities available to them locally.
